Tomo Campbell’s monumental paintings hover between figuration and abstraction: His suggestive forms (a head here, a horse there) spill into free-flowing gestural loops and bold fields of color. While the London-based artist riffs on the kind of heroic tableaux that one might find in Renaissance or Neoclassical paintings, his muted pastel palette and wildly inventive brushstrokes push these familiar subjects into poetic, dreamlike realms. Campbell has exhibited extensively within the U.K. as well as in Dallas, Taipei, and Palm Beach. His works have won the hearts of numerous celebrities, including Alexa Chung and Harry Styles, who have become collectors of the artist’s work. Campbell’s brushwork is guided by his desire to make paint feel delicate and light, as if it’s on the verge of becoming liquid and shifting shapes yet again.
